Professional Expertise

Dr. Bussey has a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Texas with a specialty in Family Psychology.  Dr. Bussey has worked in a range of clinical and forensic settings throughout his thirty years of experience.  He has worked in in-patient and out-patient psychiatric settings and has maintained for many years an out-patient clinical family practice. He has held adjunct professorships at the University of California Irvine Medical School, Pepperdine University, and Argosy University. In those positions, he has taught psychiatric residents, masters and doctoral psychology students in both clinical and forensic psychology.   He has worked extensively in the assessment and treatment of children and during the past eighteen years has limited his focus to child custody evaluation and psychological consultation within family law and the context of the Orange County Superior Court.  He has conducted hundreds of custody evaluations covering a broad range of complex issues.  He has a great deal of experience in conducting move-away evaluations both before and after the California Supreme Court Case La Musga of 2004.  Dr. Bussey has extensive experience in testifying in court.  He has served as Case Manager and Special Master on many high conflict post- judgment cases.  He has conducted reunification work as well as co-parent counseling with families requiring those interventions. Dr. Bussey continues to prioritze professionalism and availablity to the Family Law bench, the attorneys, and very importantly, those families for whom he provides service. 










Educational Background

Dr. Bussey began study in his field of interest by obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of Texas, Austin in 1976.  He continued to pursue his passion for working with people by extending his education at the graduate level.  He received a Master’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Houston in 1979.  In 1983, Dr. Bussey received the highest academic degree obtainable within the area of psychology.  He was granted a PhD from the University of North Texas, an APA approved program.  During his doctorate work, he served as a teaching assistant in statistics and was elected President of the Graduate Association of Psychology students.    In addition, Dr. Bussey completed an internship in clinical psychology at Austin State Hospital.  During his internship, he specialized in working with severely mentally ill adolescents and adults gaining an in depth knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of complex mental disorders. As part of his internship, he was a member of a team of doctors that provided medical consultation to patients at Brackenridge Hospital, a local trauma center.  This training provided Dr. Bussey with the knowledge and experience to bridge the practice of medicine with the practice of psychology.   Dr. Bussey continues, each year, to further his knowledge in the field of psychology, by not only fulfilling his state mandated continuing education requirements by attending seminars and classes, but adhering to a higher standard of continuing professional education as required in his field of subspecialty, child custody.   Dr. Bussey has participated in extensive post doctoral continuing education specific to child custody, his area of focus during the last thirteen years.  This training includes domestic violence, high conflict and special cases of child custody that include substance abuse and move-away factors.  Dr. Bussey is listed on the panel of child custody evaluators approved by the Orange County Superior Court and maintains all qualifications under California Rules of Court Sections 5.225 and 5.230.  Additionally, he maintains current membership status in the following professional organizations:  The American Psychological Association, The California Psychological Association, and The Association of Family and Conciliation Courts. Dr. Bussey has thirty years of post doctoral experience as a psychologist practicing in a broad range of applied settings.
